How to Program a Honeywell Thermostat

Honeywell manufactures manual thermostats as well as programmable digital thermostats. Honeywell makes its digital thermostats easy to program and reset. The company offers technical videos for thermostat configuration for you to see on their website. With the videos, you can follow the instructions step by step. Below are some of the steps that you should follow to set up your thermostat appropriately.

Step 1:

Find the system tab on the left side of the thermostat. Move it to select the system you want to use. The system tab has three designations: hot, cold, and off. Set the time and day. Press the button labeled “Clk,” and the hour will flash. Use the up and down arrow buttons to change the hour. Press “Clk” again, and the minutes flash. Press the up or down arrow buttons to change the minutes. Do the same to change the day. Press “Exit” to set the time and day setting functions.

Step 2:

Find the fan tab on the thermostat’s right side and move it to either the “Auto” or the “On” position. The “Auto” position only turns the fan on when the cooling or heating system is running. The “On” position will leave the fan running continuously to circulate the air in your home without having the system in cool or heat mode. This is especially useful in the spring season when the air circulation alone cools the house. Modify the daylight savings time if necessary.

There is a default schedule that maintains heat or cool from 6-8 am. Then it turns the system down from 8 am to 6 pm while at work. It kicks in again at 6 pm and turns the system down at 10 pm. There is an alternate schedule for the weekend. Press the button marked “Pgm.”

Step 3:

Look at the two temperature dials on the thermostat’s surface if you have a rounded thermostat. The lower dial is the actual room temperature. Rotate the thermostat body around the temperature dials until the upper red indicator indicates the desired room temperature. Remember that you must configure the system tab accordingly. Choose the day of the program with the button marked “Day” and then set the time increments using the arrow buttons.

Learn how to override program settings. You can usually override a program by pressing the up or down button on the control panel. This will make the temperature warmer or cooler, depending on the button you choose. If you want to cancel all programming, you must enter the program settings and follow the thermostat manual instructions.

Activate voice control: There are certain types of Honeywell thermostats (including the Lyric) with which you can communicate directly with the control panel through the Amazon Echo speaker. You can enable the connection between the two devices through the SmartHome app and then speak the commands to Amazon Echo.

Configure geographic location: To configure this setting, you need a Wi-Fi thermostat and can connect to your smartphone. Then follow the manufacturer’s instructions to set up a geographic location around the perimeter of your home. Every time you go outside this perimeter, the thermostat will change the temperature setting.

Step 4:

Find the temperature tab on the bottom of the thermostat if it is square. Move the tab to the left or right to set the desired room temperature—select heat mode. The mode is selected with the switch marked “Heat Off Cool”. Press the “P#” button, and the heating setpoint will flash. Adjust the temperature using the arrow buttons.

Program your thermostat for your weekend routine. When you’re done with your weekday sleep time, hit “Select” and go through the same selection process for the weekend. After setting the weekend sleep time, press “Select” once more. The display will show that programming is complete.

Step 5:

Select the Cool mode with the switch marked “Heat Off. Cool.” Press the “P#” button, and the cooling setpoint will flash. Adjust the temperature using the arrow buttons.

Step 6:

Set an indefinite temperature by pressing “Standby” and adjust the temperature with the triangle buttons. Cancel the temperature by pressing the “Standby” button again. Press “P#” and follow the same procedure for the remaining three periods — go to work, get home from work and go to bed—Press “Exit” to finish programming the Honeywell RTH230B thermostat.

Setting a Temporary Hold

Set a temporary hold of the temperature by adjusting the temperature with the up and down arrow buttons. The temperature will be maintained until the next scheduled period takes effect.

If you can’t handle configuring your thermostat, you should contact an HVAC expert for help.
